Description
Chubb's House is a town house located in East Looe, originally built over what is likely a fish cellar and later used as a slaughterhouse. The property dates back to a deed from 1696 for Henry Chubb. It features painted rubble walls and a steep dry slate roof, which includes a full-width 20th-century slate-hung dormer window. A distinctive original hand-made clay ridge tile on the right depicts a figure, said to be the devil, on horseback. The house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a slightly irregular two-window range. The windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The central doorway is located under a landing and is accessed through a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch made of painted rubble, which includes a staircase with slate treads. Inside, there are said to be 20th-century alterations. The ridge tile is similar to those found on Islander Cottage and the Jolly Sailor, both in West Looe. The house is included for its group value.
