Description
Shepherds House is a mine captain's house built between 1817 and 1818 for John Giddy, the manager of Sir Christopher Hawkins' mine and superintendent of the smelting house. It cost £10.16s to construct. The building is made of stone with slate hung externally and features a slate roof. It has a plan of three by two bays, with a central stair hall, a dining room to the left, and a drawing room to the right on the main east front. At the rear, there is a lower 20th-century two-storey wing that extends along the rear elevation as a single-storey lean-to.
The house is two storeys high and has a central square porch supported by Doric pilasters, which carries a painted stone cornice. The entrance features a six-panelled door, with the upper panels being glazed, and a contemporary acanthus leaf iron knocker with a brass plate. There are windows on either side of the ground floor and one above the hall landing, all set in arched recesses. The ground floor windows have twelve panes, with the upper sash being round-headed and featuring radial glazing bars. The outer windows on the first floor are nine-pane sashes. The eaves are panelled and supported by paired modillions.
The south elevation, which faces the garden, has three bays, with the center bay being blind. The north elevation is rendered. The roof is hipped and features a central six-flue stack. Inside, the room to the left of the hall has arched recesses and panelled shutters on the splayed window reveals.
