Description

A farmhouse dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of shale rubble with dressed granite quoins, slate sills, and flat brick arches. The roof is hipped, covered with scantle slate, and features brick chimneys on the side walls, along with cast iron ogee eaves gutters. The plan incorporates a slightly deeper parlour on the left, a wide entrance hall leading to a central rear staircase and a small, unheated room to the left of the doorway. A large kitchen/living room is situated on the right, with a pantry located in the rear left corner. A large, partly blocked hearth and a doorway beside it provide access to a later single-storey dairy on the right, which is backed by a pumphouse situated over a well.

The front of the building is irregular, featuring a 3-window facade. There are 6-pane horned sash windows; these are disposed irregularly, with one window set apart to the left of the doorway and two on the right. A small 20th-century window has been inserted into a cloakroom to the left of the doorway, while the first-floor windows are closer together. The outshut pumphouse on the right projects slightly.

The interior remains virtually complete and unaltered since the house was built. Features include a turned staircase, 2-panel and ledged doors, chamfered beams in the kitchen, some panelled window jambs, and a 4-pan copper creamer with brass handles in the dairy. A reused circa late 17th century leaded casement is used as an overlight above the doorway of a small first-floor chamber/store at the rear right. This chamber/store may originate from an earlier house on the same site; however, a small remnant of an earlier building is found across the road. The property is a most interesting and complete farmhouse with an unusual plan.
