Description

Devil's Roost, also known as Grove Cottage on late 19th-century maps, is a house dating from the early 19th century. It was built as a dower house for the Trefusis Family. The front is stuccoed, while the rest is painted rubble, topped with a flipped grouted scantle slate roof featuring wide eaves with lozenge decoration on the soffit plaster. It has cast iron ogee gutters and rendered brick chimneys on the side walls and over the cross wall of the rear wing.

The house has a symmetrical two-window southeast front with a plinth, keyed stucco arches, and a mid-floor band. The original hornless paired sash windows have uncentred pointed arched lights. The first-floor windows are set within three-sided arched openings and feature paired sashes with a central mullion and branching Y bars. There is a doorway to the right of the right-hand side wall, leading to an original wooden porch that has 20th-century granite posts replacing the original columns. The porch includes a moulded cornice, latticed soffit detail, a panelled ceiling, and pilasters flanking the doorway, which contains a six-panelled door with intersecting glazing in the rectangular fanlight and panelled reveals.

Inside, the layout remains largely unchanged since it was built, retaining most of the original carpentry and joinery. The open-well open-string staircase has carved tread ends, stick balusters, and a mahogany handrail. Each reception room features plaster ceilings with trailing bands, while the first room of the wing has slate flags and panelled doors throughout. The house maintains an early 19th-century plan arrangement with an original side entrance and no central front door.
