Description

Tregew is a house built in the very early 19th century, with an extension added around 1830. It features a stucco exterior over stone and has a hipped roof made of grouted scantle slate, with brick chimneys positioned over the original cross walls. The original layout consisted of two rooms, which have now been combined into one central room, with additional rooms added at either end in the 1820s to 1830s. There is also a narrow service area and an axial passage at the rear, along with a two-storey projection at the left rear corner that includes a canted bay on the side wall.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with a 1:2:1 bay arrangement facing the road. The front features early 19th-century hornless sash windows. The central section has two 12-pane sash windows and a doorway with a 20th-century glazed door, flanked by windows set in round-headed stucco recesses. Projecting keystones from an earlier version of the house are still visible. The later bays on either side have central 30-pane bowed sash windows on both floors.

At the rear, there is a segmental arched porch supported by fluted columns and topped with a simple entablature, featuring a six-panel door and a fanlight above. The fanlight has two intersecting ogee arches and may have been relocated from the front of the house when the stucco and wings were added. The interior remains largely unchanged since the early 19th century, showcasing much original carpentry and joinery, including panelled doors, reveals, reeded architraves with rosettes in the corners, a Regency fireplace in the left-hand room, and some arches in the passages. There is also a unique room on the first-floor landing under the outshut, which has Gothic-style borrowed light with a hoodmould. This house represents an interesting remodelling from the early 19th century, and the bowed windows were evidently a popular feature in this parish during that time, as seen in other nearby properties.
