Description
STOKE CLIMSLAND - SX 37 SE 8/130 Temple approx 270m north- west of Whiteford 17.6.82 (formerly listed as Rustic GV II Temple)
Folly in form of temple, latterley cattle byre, now holiday home. 1799, restored by Landmark Trust c1987. Granite ashlar front with recessed Coade stone plaques; roughly coursed slate-stone with rough granite quoins to sides and rear. Graded slate roof, recently replacing corrugated iron, possibly originally of lead. Built in the form of a classical temple with projecting pedimented section to front flanked by lean-to wings. Single storey with moulted eaves cornice carried up around pediment and continued to lean-tos and rear. Triple round-headed arcade with impost band to front has late C20 French windows in late C18 style. Mutilated Coade stone plaque to front of each lean-to depicts a reclining female figure, right with sheaf of corn, left resting on a stack of bales with sailing ship in background. Tack is inscribed "COADE/ LAMBETH/1799" and left also has inscription "AMERICA INDIA". Small 6-paned sash with granite lintel to side of each lean-to and to rear of right lean-to. Recessed boarded door to rear of left lean-to. Interior: Triple round-headed recesses to back wall, centre with plain white marble fireplace probably inserted in late C20 restoration. Blind elliptical arches to side walls with late C20 six-panel doors leading to lean-tos. Restored moulded plaster cornice and plain dado. (BOE, P 240).
