Description

Burraton Farmhouse likely originated in the 16th or 17th century, and was remodelled in the mid-to-late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of roughly coursed slate-stone with granite quoins, and is roughcast except to the right return. The roof is hipped and slate-covered with deep boarded eaves. The farmhouse has two storeys and a five-window front. The first floor windows on the left are 20th century replacements, while two windows to the right are 19th century and have L-hinges, all featuring multiple panes. Similar paired 20th-century casements are on the ground floor to the left, a 19th-century casement with L-hinges is in the centre, and a 20th-century casement is on the right. The two central ground floor windows are set within a head and the top of a mullion, remnants of the original 2-light mullion windows previously in that position. A multi-paned early 20th-century bay window is located in the fourth bay from the left. The entrance is in the second bay from the left, accessed via a hip-roofed porch with a small window to the front and a six-panel door to the right side. The inner doorway has a segmental head of chamfered granite, with a six-panel door, the upper panels glazed. Two integral lateral stacks are present on the back wall, with a slate-hung hip-roofed staircase projection between these. A twin-gabled range, dating to the 19th century, projects at right angles to the rear on the right, the right gable having an integral end stack and a clay oven projection. The interior was not inspected during a resurvey in 1987 but is reported to contain exposed ceiling beams and potentially other features of interest.
