Description

East Trehill is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from around the mid 17th century, with a 19th-century addition and some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble and has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, featuring gable end and axial stacks. The building has a three-room and through passage plan. The lower end room on the right is heated by a gable end stack and has external steps leading to a loft on the first floor. The hall is to the left of the passage and is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage. The room at the far left end is also heated by a gable end stack. Behind the hall, there is an unheated one-room wing, likely from the mid 19th century, and a single-storey outshut at the rear of the left end room.

The exterior is two storeys high, with the passage and lower end at a lower roof level, creating an asymmetrical three-window front. The upper end to the left has a symmetrical two-window front, featuring two 20th-century two-light casements with segmental arches at the ground floor and two similar casements in gabled dormers at the first floor. There is a buttress to the left. The passage includes a 20th-century door with a pitched slate hood, a 20th-century two-light casement with a segmental arch to the right at the ground floor, and a buttress, along with an external stone stair leading to the loft door. The right gable end has two 19th-century 16-pane sash windows at the first floor, while the left side features an external stack. At the rear, the lower end has a 20th-century two-light casement at the ground floor to the left and a 19th-century two-light casement at the first floor. The passage has a 20th-century rear door and an open-fronted porch with a pitched roof. The rear wing behind the hall has a hipped roof and a single light at the ground floor, with a 20th-century two-light casement at the first floor. To the right is a single-storey lean-to with a catslide roof that aligns with the main range, featuring two 12-pane lights on the left side and a loft door. The interior was not inspected, but sources mention a wooden ovolo-moulded doorframe and suggest that other 17th-century features may still be present.
