Description
Port Navas Quay is a quay located on Porthnavas Creek. It is likely an enlargement from the early to mid-19th century of an earlier quay that dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century. The quay is constructed of massive granite ashlar. The earlier quay, which can be seen on the northeast side, features pitched slate construction with granite ashlar quoins and copings. This earlier section has slightly battered walls, while the later granite ashlar extension, which makes up most of the quay, has vertical walls. The quay is almost square in plan, tapering slightly at the outer side as it extends into the creek. At the top on the outer side, there is a circular manhole that leads down to an opening at a lower level, likely used for loading and unloading ships or for embarking and disembarking at low tide. The top entrance of the manhole is rebated for a hatch cover.
