Description
The former barn adjoining Reen Manor House is a building that has been converted into living accommodation. It likely dates back to the Medieval period or the 16th century, was re-roofed around the early 19th century, and had its flooring updated in the 20th century. The structure features mixed rubble walls with some dressed granite and has Delabole rag-slate roofs with gable ends. There is probably a 20th-century rubble chimney at the right-hand end.
The barn has an L-shaped plan with a rear wing built into the bank at the back, and it includes a porch that provides access to the first floor. A later lean-to is located on the left side of the porch. On either side of the front, there are small projecting former stair towers. The left-hand tower connects the barn to the 17th-century range of Reen Manor House. The threshing floor is positioned to the left of the middle, featuring opposing doorways.
The exterior of the barn is two storeys high and has a two-window southwest front with three original weathered buttresses located on the left, right, and middle. There are possibly 16th-century or 18th-century remodelling or enlargement features, including basket-arched openings. The far left and right sides show the remains of former stair towers. An old doorway is present in the left-hand tower, with a blocked window above it, while the other tower has a later or remodelled doorway with an original slit window above the first floor. There is also a loading or winnowing doorway to the left of the middle buttress, with 20th-century doors and windows. The rear of the building has similar openings.
This barn is an interesting structure and is comparable to the old barn at Golden Manor in Probus parish. Historical records indicate that a house was newly built at Reen in 1590, which may suggest a date for the construction or remodelling of this barn. Inside, there is an early 19th-century king-post roof structure, while the rest of the interior features are from the 20th century.
