Description
The Altarnun War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also commemorates individuals from the Second World War. It is made of granite stone supplied by the Bodmin Granite Company.
The memorial features a Celtic-wheel cross on a tapering shaft. The shaft has a relief carving of a sword and includes the inscription "PRO PATRIA / MORI" along with the dates "1914-1918." The names of those who fell in the Second World War and the dates "1939-1945" are inscribed at the base of the shaft. The shaft is set on a large pedestal, which has inscriptions on three sides. On the first side (south-east), it reads: "ERECTED BY THE / PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS / OF ALTARNUN. / TO THE SACRED MEMORY OF THE FALLEN / AND IN HONOUR OF ALL / THOSE WHO SERVED FROM THIS PARISH. / THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR / KING AND COUNTRY. / (NAMES) / R.I.P." The second and third sides list the names of 96 individuals who served during the First World War and survived, honoring their service. The pedestal is supported by a rough-hewn rectangular base, which rests on a stone slab.
The memorial is surrounded by replacement metal railings, which are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest and are not included in the listing.
