Description
Marazion Bridge is a road bridge that spans the Red River and its floodplain, with a datestone marking its construction in 1837. The bridge features granite ashlar walls, dressed granite voussoirs, string parapet copings, and rusticated piers or buttresses that resemble pilasters. Beyond the terminal piers of the parapets, the walls are constructed of rubble with simpler squared granite copings secured by iron cramps, similar to those found on Marazion Old Bridge.
The bridge has a single span and carries a wide, straight carriageway, with the parapet walls extending significantly beyond the valley. The round arch of the bridge is supported by buttressed abutments, and there are additional buttress-like features at either end, making a total of eight buttresses. The design is symmetrical, with each side mirroring the other. Each side includes a central round arch with a projecting keystone, flanked by buttresses on either side, and further buttresses beyond. These buttresses rise slightly above the parapets and are adorned with V-jointed rustications and squat pyramidal caps. Strings are positioned below the parapets between the central buttresses, and the copings are sloped. The central datestone features Arabic numerals in relief.
This bridge is notably wide for its time and showcases high-quality detailing, built to accommodate the main flow of traffic from Marazion Old Bridge.
