House Adjoining The Post Office And Front Garden Wall

This is a house adjoining the Post Office, along with a front garden wall, originally built as a house with an integral shop, dating from the early 19th century. The building features dressed granite brought to course, granite sills, and flat brick arches with projecting granite keystones. It has an asbestos slate roof with brick chimneys over the gable ends and a cast iron ogee eaves gutter. The house has a double depth plan, with a kitchen/living room on the left and the original shop on the right, separated by a cross passage, with shallower service rooms flanking the stair at the back.

The house is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window east front, with a central doorway. The ground floor right-hand window, which was originally the shop window, is wider. There is a top-glazed door from the early to mid-20th century, a four-pane sash window on the ground floor left, a six-pane sash window on the ground floor right, and original 16-pane hornless sashes on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.

The front garden is elevated above the road, and the battered retaining wall is made of coarsed, roughly-squared granite with slightly projecting dressed granite coping. On the right side wall, there is a gateway with round-headed granite monolith gate piers. This house is an interesting example of rural village architecture with a shop design, contributing to the character of the area alongside other listed buildings.
