Description
The engine house chimney, located approximately 50 meters east of Read's Shaft in Chacewater, is a Grade II listed structure dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of killas rubble and brick. Originally, it featured a rectangular single-cell plan with a chimney at the northeast corner, but now only the chimney and some attached walling remain. The chimney consists of rubble in the lower stage and brick in the upper stage, separated by a corbelled brick collar. This structure is included in the listing for its group value.
Great Wheal Busy, the mine associated with this chimney, is historically significant, having been operational since 1823 under the name 'Chacewater Mines' and later as 'Great Wheal Busy' from 1856. In 1865, it was noted for having a pumping engine, stamping engine, winding engine, and crushing engine. Information is sourced from "The Mines of Cornwall" by Thomas Spargo.
