Description
School House, built in 1898 by William Larkins Bernard FRIBA (1843-1922) for the Bristol School Board, served as a caretaker’s house for the Fairfield Road School. The building is constructed of squared Pennant sandstone rubble with red brick and terra cotta dressings, and has a double Roman tiled roof. It is a two-storey structure with a two-window front onto Fairfield Road. A canted bay window is present on the ground floor of the left side, featuring plate glass sash windows within brick surrounds and quoins. First-floor windows rise through the eaves and terminate in pediments. The side elevations of the front range have segmental pedimented gable ends; the east side (facing the playground) is blind, while the west side (facing Fairlawn Road) has a single sash window on each floor. An entrance is located in the west-facing side wall of the rear range, featuring a modern replacement front door. The rear range also has a further segment-headed gable at its north end. The building is historically significant as part of a group of distinguished buildings designed for the Bristol School Board, with Bernard serving as chief architect from 1888.
