Description
Numbers 39 and 41 are a pair of attached houses, now functioning as a single college, built in the mid-18th century and converted in the late 20th century. The buildings are finished in stucco with a rubble gable and have central party wall stacks, topped with a pantile roof. They feature a double-depth plan and are designed in an early Georgian style, comprising two storeys, an attic, and a basement.
The left-hand house, No.39, has a two-window range, while the right-hand house, No.41, has a four-window range. They are linked by a timber modillion eaves cornice. No.39 features a central doorway with a moulded frame, a bracketed canopy, and a wide rectangular overlight with glazing bars, along with a six-panel door. No.41 has an early 19th-century semicircular-arched doorway with a bracketed pediment, a batswing fanlight, and a six-panel door. The windows of No.39 include 8/8-pane sashes and 6/6-pane sashes to the left of the doorway, while No.41 has narrow 6/6-pane sashes with cambered heads, slightly wider for the three ground-floor sashes. There are six hipped dormers with terracotta finials.
Inside, the buildings have been extensively remodelled and interconnected, featuring a rear lateral dogleg stair with uncut string, turned balusters, panelled square newels, and a ramped rail, along with shutters and fireplaces. The front area includes attached wrought-iron railings and gates with urn finials.
