Description
57 and 59 High Street are a pair of attached houses built in the late 18th century and altered in the mid-19th century. The exterior is rendered with limestone dressings, featuring gable and ridge stacks, and a double-pile pantile roof that is hipped to the left. The houses are designed in a mid-Georgian style and have two storeys with a three-window range. There are plain pilasters supporting a parapet that extends around the left end, with a coped right gable. The left-hand house is symmetrical, while a one-window range house has been added to the right. Each house has doorways that are set back, featuring panelled reveals and soffits, six-panel doors, and fanlights. No. 57 has plate glass windows, and both houses have 19th-century brackets and pedimented lintels adorned with wreaths. The windows are horned six-over-six pane sashes, with one located to the right of the doorway of No. 57, while the left return has hornless sashes.
Inside No. 59, there is a central through passage with one fully panelled wall that leads to a dogleg stair at the rear. This stair features stick balusters, column newels, and ramped rails, along with vine cornice panels, 19th-century fireplaces, four-panel shutters, and six-panel doors.
