Description

38 Church Road is a house located in Westbury On Trym, dating back to the 15th century, with some parts refaced and extended in the 18th century. The building is constructed of rubble and features central and gable-end stacks, topped with a pantile roof. It has a single-depth plan with a through passage and stands two storeys tall, displaying a three-window range.

The entrance, located to the right of the central stack, features a chamfered Tudor-arched timber doorway with a door made of four studded planks, plain strap hinges, and a wrought-iron bishop's cross. To the left of the door, there are 15th-century paired lancet windows with a label mould, and a single lancet window to the right. The ground floor has 18th-century 8/8-pane sash windows, while the first floor has 6/6-pane sashes. Additionally, there are two 19th-century three-light casements situated under the eaves to the left.

On the exterior, there are two small rectangular recesses with chamfered sides, approximately 1 meter from the ground, to the left of the door. Inside, the house features a 15th-century or earlier arch-braced collar beam roof with stages of wind bracing, a large corbel for the principal truss, and post and panel framing on the ground floor. There is a central fireplace with stone cheeks and a deep stone bressumer, heavy wood locks on the door, and a 19th-century stair located to the left of the door against the front wall. This house is an important historical survival, likely connected to the nearby Church of the Holy Trinity.
