Description
No. 15 Christmas Steps is an attached house that has been converted into a shop and residence. It dates from the late 17th century and was refronted in the early 19th century. The building features a timber frame with a brick front and limestone dressings, lateral brick stacks, and a pantile roof. It has three storeys and an attic, with a two-window range.
On the left side, there is an early 19th-century semicircular-arched doorway with imposts and a key, leading to a four-panel door where the top pair is raised. The shop front, which is from the 20th century, includes a central doorway and pilaster strips above a parapet. The building has brick flat arches over a narrow stair light with glazing bars above the side door, and it features 6/6-pane sash windows along with two dormers that have 20th-century casements.
Inside, the ground floor includes a rear doorway with an exposed arched timber lintel, a left-hand fireplace, and a newel-framed unpainted oak winder stair. There is also a cistern beneath the flagged ground floor.
