Description
A terrace of five houses, numbered 15 to 19, now used as offices, was built in 1721 by John Price. The design is Early Georgian in style, with brick construction, limestone dressings, a brick party wall stack, and a pantile mansard roof. The buildings are arranged with a double-depth plan over three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a 3-window range to each house except for number 19, which has a 4-window range. The facade is articulated by rusticated pilaster strips that extend over moulded strings and a parapet coping. Doorways are irregularly spaced—number 15 between the right-hand windows, number 16 to the right, number 17 to the left with a narrow hall window, number 18 to the right, and number 19 between the left-hand windows. Each doorway features fluted pilasters supporting scrolled stone brackets to pediments; a broken segmental pediment adorns number 19. The door frames have rectangular overlights and glazing bars, with wrought-iron lamp holders at numbers 15 and 18. Eight-panel doors are present. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes in exposed frames, with number 15 having keyed stone architraves and 3/6-pane sashes to the second floor. Low, segmental-arched basement hatches are also present. There are three dormers on each building.
The interior features entrance halls with panelled partitions, fully-panelled rooms with cornices. Hall arches incorporate fluted pilasters, with open dogleg stairs providing access to the rear from the half-landings. The stair has column-on-vase balusters, moulded ramped handrails, and wainscot. Six-panel doors, panelled shutters, and carved fire surrounds are also present. Number 19 contains a good open-well stair, and number 15 has notable Rococo plasterwork ceilings, likely by Joseph Thomas, covering the walls and soffits of the stair.
Attached to the front of the terrace are wrought-iron area railings and gates with urn finials. The houses were constructed to varying plans for different clients, but maintain common front dimensions.
