Description

Numbers 11 and 12 are a pair of attached houses built in 1718 for Captain Edmond Saunders. They are constructed of brick with limestone dressings and feature a hipped pantile roof. The houses are designed in an early Georgian style with a double-depth plan, each having two storeys, a basement, and an attic, along with a two-window range.

Architectural details include brick pilasters, moulded strings at each floor, and a moulded coping. The left-hand doorways, which date from the 19th century, have plain designs with rectangular overlights and 20th-century six-panel doors. The second-floor windows are adorned with flat, rubbed brick arches that have wavy arrisses, and the keys above the windows display various motifs such as grotesque faces, fish, birds, fruit, and a harp. The ground-floor windows have 6/9-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows have 6/6-pane sashes, and there is one hipped dormer on each house.

The interior was completely rebuilt around 1970. A notable feature of the property is the deep front area, which has steps leading down to the basement and is enclosed by attached wrought-iron railings. These houses were originally one residence with Number 10, and the key motifs may relate to Captain Saunders.
