Description

St John the Baptist Hermitage is a cave located on Redcliff Hill in Bristol, dated 1669. It is constructed of rubble with limestone ashlar. The cave has been hewn from the rock walls and features a pointed-arched doorway. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain a plaque inside the door that reads, "1669/ HERE LYETH THE BODY OF CHRISTOPHER THE MONK OR CHRISTOPHER BIRCHEAD OF THIS CITY, MARINER, WHO DIED THE 16TH DAY OF THE 9TH MONTH '69." Currently, a concrete wall blocks the entrance.
