Description

The War Memorial at St Mary Redcliffe is a First World War memorial built in 1921, designed by Sir George Oatley, and altered after the Second World War. It is made of Clipsham stone.

The memorial features a tall, tapering shaft topped with a cross. The cross includes a figure of the Living Christ, flanked by the figures of the Mother and the Friend for support. These figures are positioned on a capital adorned with carved tracery panels. The base of the shaft rests on a square pedestal, which has carved panels on three sides, inspired by the design of a medieval cross at Dundry. The fourth side of the pedestal displays the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND UNDYING MEMORY OF ALL CONNECTED WITH REDCLIFFE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT CAUSE 1914-1919 1939-1945." The pedestal is elevated on a four-stepped base, with the bottom step featuring a capping stone.
