Description
Chatterton's House and School, along with the attached screen wall, dates back to 1749. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar, with render, brick eaves stacks, and a hipped pantile roof. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a three-window range. The central doorway features a flat canopy supported by thick, scrolled brackets, leading to a 20th-century porch. The windows are 6/6-pane sash windows set in flush boxes, and there is a parapet above. A plaque above the door states, "THIS HOUSE WAS CREATED BY GILES MALPAS... AD 1749," while another plaque notes it as "THE BIRTHPLACE OF THOMAS CHATTERTON." To the right, there is an ashlar screen wall that is one storey high and has a symmetrical two-window range, topped with a pediment on rusticated pilasters. This wall features two keyed, segmental-headed windows with architraves, and the flanking sections are set back with keyed doorways; there is a 20th-century door to the left and an inserted sash window to the right. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this is significant as it is the birthplace and school of Thomas Chatterton, the boy poet, who was educated here under his father, the schoolmaster.
