Description
The Air Balloon Hill Council Schools Instruction Centre is an instruction centre built in 1905 by architects Latrobe and Weston. It features a construction of pennant rubble with limestone ashlar dressings, lateral stacks, and double Roman tile hipped, gabled roofs. The building has a single-depth plan, with a hall on the right and a caretaker's house on the left. It is a single-storey structure with a six-window range hall. The right-hand end is gabled and has a large lunette above three windows, while the front displays 4/4-pane sash windows and a corbel table at the eaves.
The two-storey caretaker's house has a central lateral stack and a pyramidal roof. The left-hand corner is angled and set forward, featuring two windows and a small gable inscribed with the year 1905, adorned with Art Nouveau flowers. The central doorway is flanked by wide, flat buttresses leading to a parapet, with a segmental arch set back beneath a corbelled band and a panel inscribed "MANUAL INSTRUCTION CENTRE." The left return of the building includes Art Nouveau floral designs, a lateral stack, and a central segmental pediment. This building is part of a group with the Junior School and Infant School, sharing many architectural details with them. It is a notable example of the work of one of the few Bristol architects who experimented with Art Nouveau design.
