Description

Numbers 2-16 and attached end piers and balustrades comprise a terrace of eight houses built around 1845 by Thomas Foster and Sons. The design is in a Neoclassical style and constructed from limestone ashlar, featuring party wall stacks and a hidden roof. The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan, and each is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a two-window front. The terrace appears as a composed whole, with the end pair set forward. The ground floor is banded, and there is a prominent plat band, pilasters to the frieze incorporating triglyphs and faceted blocks, a cornice, and a coped attic storey. The left-hand doorways are recessed, having bracketed lintels, overlights, and six-panel doors. The ground-floor windows are tripartite, while the upper windows are plain, with sashes featuring six-pane arrangements on the upper floors and three/six-pane sashes in the attic. First-floor balconies are situated between pavilions, incorporating cast-iron brackets and bowed railings. The front returns display a three-window range, with the outer windows being blind. Single-storey porches have semicircular-arched doorways and side windows containing stained glass. The rear elevations are symmetrical. The interior has not been inspected. Attached piers and balustrades with intersecting circles are present in the front areas of the end houses. The details of the terrace are similar to those found in Foster’s houses in West Mall and Clifton Vale.
