Description

This is a terrace of sixteen houses on Southleigh Road, Clifton, Bristol, with an additional property at 36 Oakfield Road. The houses were built in the late Georgian style, incorporating Greek Revival detailing, and date from the late 18th century. They are constructed of limestone ashlar, with party wall stacks and a slate and pantile mansard roof. The buildings have a double-depth plan, and each is arranged over three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a single-window range to the front. The terrace is stepped, featuring a banded ground floor, pilasters above with an incised palmette decoration to the frieze, cornice, and parapet, along with coped party walls. The recessed doors on the left-hand side have overlights with margin panes and six-panel doors, and are bordered by architraves. The windows are six-over-six sash windows, larger on the first floor, which is characterised by bracketed slate balconies with various cast-iron railings, and dormers. The leftmost house has a two-window range with an early 20th-century shop front beneath a cornice and a segmental pediment, and a two-window range to the left return with a pediment over the shop window, topped with a hipped roof. Inside, the entrance hall features a semicircular arch, a central dogleg winder staircase with stick balusters, cupboards between the stairs and the party wall, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters.
