Description
This is a terrace of four houses located on the north side of Royal York Crescent, Clifton, Bristol, built in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar, with party wall stacks and slate mansard roofs. They follow a double-depth plan and are built in a late Georgian style.
Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement. The terrace is articulated by pilasters extending to a plat band, cornice, and parapet, with a full attic storey prominent at number 49. The left-hand doorways are semicircular-arched; number 47 features pilasters to an entablature, displaying a metal fanlight in the shape of teardrops, and a six-panel door with the upper four panels raised. The ground floor has single eight-pane sashes, the first floor has six-pane sashes with timber balconies, and cast-iron brackets are present at numbers 48 and 49. Wrought-iron railings with pointed arches and quatrefoils are seen at numbers 47, 48, and 50. The second floor features three-pane sashes, and the attic has two six-pane sashes at number 49, along with various dormers.
A projecting basement creates a raised flagged pavement, now featuring 20th-century windows and doorways. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings line the basement pavement.
