Description

Numbers 17 and 19 are a pair of attached houses located on Gordon Road in Clifton, Bristol, dated 1805 according to the deeds. They are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings and feature tall brick party wall stacks, although the roof is not visible. The houses have a double-depth plan and consist of three storeys and a basement, with a two-window range. The symmetrical front includes single-storey side entrance blocks that rise to two storeys halfway back. The central block is accentuated by clasping pilasters and a moulded parapet, with a recessed party wall strip.

Number 17 has a 20th-century door, while Number 19 features an elliptical-arched doorway with an architrave, fanlight, and a six-panel door. The windows include 8/8-pane sashes, with 4/8 panes on the second floor, and outer semicircular-arched recesses—blind to the left and with 2/2-pane sashes to the right. The rear elevation matches the front and includes a canted bay for Number 19.

Inside, the two houses have different layouts. Number 19 has an entrance hall and a central lateral dogleg winder stair with stick balusters and column newels, along with cupboards between the stair and the party wall, a semicircular-arched basement door, marble fireplaces, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters. Number 17 features an open dogleg stair.

Additionally, there are attached front garden walls and ashlar piers, making this the earliest house built on the road.
