Description

The Bristol Police Headquarters and Fire Station, dated 1928, was designed by Ivor Jones and Percy Thomas. It features a limestone ashlar exterior and has an axial plan that forms three sides of a triangular courtyard. The building is designed in a stripped Neo-Georgian style with Mannerist details and consists of four storeys with a five-window range. The symmetrical front includes an eight-window section on the left that curves back, leading into a sharply curved twelve-window elevation on Silver Street. This elevation is adorned with a fluted frieze and a parapet.

The ground and first floors are banded to a plat band, and a large central Mannerist doorway is set in a semicircular-arched recess. This doorway has a moulded architrave with Gibbs blocks and five massive stepped keys, leading to double 24-panel doors with a fanlight above. Above the doorway, a scroll is inscribed with "POLICE HEADQUARTERS."

On the left side, there are six two-storey vehicle entrances with stepped lintels, paired folding doors featuring ten panes and an overlight. The right side has a pedestrian doorway framed in timber and glass. The corner facing Silver Street has a two-window section with an inset drum that is taller than the sides, featuring a scrolled panel inscribed "FIRE SERVICE" alongside a shield. The Silver Street elevation includes six tall vehicle entrances, with two window sections on the left and four on the right. The windows are plain and fitted with metal glazing bar casements.

Inside, there are few decorative elements, but the building incorporates a yard for vehicle washing and a tower for hose drying. It shares a design similar to the Central Police Station.
