Description
Sandhills is a large house from the early 19th century, with later additions, located in Mudeford. It has an irregular plan and is constructed of painted brick with a slate roof. The southeastern part of the house is completely round and features two storeys. The southern half includes a wide verandah on the ground floor and a similar balcony above, both supported by Doric columns, with an iron balustrade on the balcony. The house has French windows with modern glazing and central chimneys. On the north side of the round section, there is a wide Doric porch with columns and a pediment.
A long west wing was added around 1830, which has seven windows, including a curved bay at the west end. To the north of this, there is a later 19th-century wing with six windows, including a two-storey bay. The Victoria County history notes that this house belonged to William Stewart Rose, a friend of William Pitt, who was nicknamed "Pitt's Rose." It is said that Sir Walter Scott stayed here in 1807 and wrote part of Marmion in the house, and that Samuel Taylor Coleridge stayed here in 1816, although it is also claimed for Gundimore nearby, which is considered more likely.
Sandhills, along with Lawn Cottage, Nelson's Cottage, its lodge, and the street boundary wall and gate piers, form a group of local interest. The lodge at Sandhills is noted for its local significance.
