Description

The Dalkeith Building is a terrace of shops, offices, and dwellings located on Old Christchurch Road, dated 1893. It is primarily constructed of brick with limestone trim and detailing, along with some sections of timber framing. The building features steep roofs covered with plain tiles and various multiple stacks that display 'Tudor' detailing. This long structure showcases a complex mix of eclectic architectural styles, including 'free-style' elements, deep wings at the back with canted corners, and courtyards.

The building stands four-and-a-half storeys tall, beginning with a rounded corner on the left side. It includes two bays in brick, three bays with two storeys of timber-framed projecting double-gabled bays, a central bay in brick, and three additional bays to the right of the centre, culminating in a brick terminal bay and an octagonal turret at the extreme right. The bays are generally defined by octagonal brick piers.

There is a variety of windows throughout the building, all featuring plate glass and sash designs, many of which have upper sashes with glazing bars containing small square panes. The first floor has hexagonal bays beneath a stone-detailed overhang, while the upper two storeys feature timber gabled sections with cross-mullioned casements and decorative bargeboards. At the back, the deep wings have canted corners and pointed arches spanning two-storey recesses at the party walls. The left and right ends of the building are adorned with grouped Venetian Gothic windows on the first floor.

Overall, the Dalkeith Building is a richly detailed and eclectic structure that has retained nearly all of its original features, with the exception of the ground floor, which has been altered to accommodate continuous varied late 20th-century shop fronts. In the context of Bournemouth's architecture from this period, it stands out as an excellent and bold terrace with a strong personality.
