Description

The Royal Bath Hotel, built between 1837 and 1838 by Benjamin Ferrey for Sir George Tapps-Gervis, was significantly expanded from 1878 to 1880 by C C Creeke for hotelier Sir Merton Russell-Cotes. The building is designed in a stucco classical style and features two and three storeys with a varied silhouette. The original hotel, designed by Ferrey, is represented in the main entrance wing at the south end, which includes a composition of a central section and wings, featuring a tripartite first-floor window framed by Ionic columns. Creeke added a second floor to the central section, incorporating Corinthian columns, as well as projecting corner pavilions with canted bays and recessed chateau roofs made of patterned slate with iron cresting.

The garden side of the hotel is also symmetrical, showcasing a central bow under a conical roof and a conservatory across the front. The street-facing facade to the north is five windows wide and exhibits a Barry-Italianate style, with a rusticated ground floor, triangular pediments over the first-floor windows, segmental pediments over the second-floor windows, and a balustraded parapet. Adjacent to this is the Buttery entrance, which is set beneath a narrow segmental pediment between canted bays, followed by a long two-storey Casino Club featuring three spired tourelles, patterned slates, and moulded corbel bases. On the garden side, there is a large later extension that includes another conical-roofed bow situated between polygonal towers topped with short spires. A recent block has been added to the north-east.
