Description
The Constable's House is a Grade I listed building dating from the 12th century, constructed by Baldwin de Redvers at the north-east corner of the curtain wall of the Castle. This two-storey, rectangular structure is made of stone rubble, with most of the walls still intact, including the southern gable end. It features round arched window openings on all four facades, each divided into two lights by a shaft of Purbeck marble, and the arches are adorned with chevron moulding. The ground floor includes slit windows, and there is an original circular chimney shaft located in the center of the east wall.
The Constable's House is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 11 (odd), the Castle, the signboard of the King's Arms Hotel, and the Town Bridge, along with Nos 4 to 6 (even), 6A, 8 to 12 (even), 12A, 14 to 18 (even), and the King's Arms Hotel opposite. Additionally, Nos 10, 12, and 12A contribute to a group on Millham Street, while Nos 8 and 10 are recognized as buildings of local interest.
