Description

The King's Arms Hotel is a Grade II listed building located on Castle Street. It consists of two sections. The western section dates from the 18th century and is constructed of painted brick with a steeply pitched slate roof and a moulded eaves cornice. This part has two storeys and a dormer, featuring one window with sashes and boxed frames. The first floor has glazing bars, while the ground floor has a three-light sash window with late 19th-century glazing.

The eastern section, built around 1800, has a white brick facade with a stucco plinth. It features a hipped bellcast slate roof and a moulded wood eaves cornice. This section has three storeys and a modern attic, with five sash windows, the upper ones having glazing bars. The central first-floor window is a three-light design with a stone pediment above and flanking pilasters. An iron balcony stretches across the width of the first floor. The wide porch is supported by Tuscan columns, and the door is flanked by narrow lights with a wide fanlight above.

The King's Arms Hotel is part of a group of buildings that includes Nos 4 to 6 (even), 6a, 8 to 12 (even), 12a, 14 to 18 (even), and Nos 1 to 11 (odd) opposite, along with the Castle, the signboard of the King's Arms Hotel, and the Constable's House and Town Bridge across the street. Nos 10, 12, and 12A also contribute to this group, as does the Town Bridge to the east. Nos 8 and 10 are noted as buildings of local interest.
