Description

The Church of St George is a church built between 1959 and 1960, designed by Potter and Hare. It is constructed of red brick with low-pitched roofs covered in copper sheets, and features precast concrete window dressings. The church has a cruciform plan, with each arm tapering towards the ends, and incorporates short transepts. The altar remains in its original position within the crossing, and a western gallery houses the organ. The church is arranged as a hall church with aisles and piers supporting the ceiling. A projecting south porch and a western tower with canted faces are also present. The tower’s solid brick walls are punctuated by two strip windows rising the full height of the eastern face. Recessed windows are at the top, beneath a deeply overhanging, parabolic concrete roof. The main body of the church features tall, vertical mullioned and transomed windows set in moulded stone surrounds. The three two-light windows in the north and south aisles are canted outwards, while the south transept window has five lights and the eastern window has seven lights, the latter being convex in plan. The roofs project over the transepts and east end.

The interior is light and spacious, with tall, slender, polygonal piers rising to a facetted vault clad in varnished timber boarding. The piers are constructed of green, burnished granolithic and feature flared capitals and bases. High-level strip windows slope inwards and outwards, and other windows have small, leaded rectangular panes of reamy glass. The sanctuary has a marble floor, raised by a step, with a central altar on a further step. A simple timber and metal altar rail is also present. A Lady Chapel is located at the east end, containing a further altar. A timber pulpit, positioned to the north-west of the sanctuary, features flared sides and a curved front with decorative vertical slats. The stone font is shaped like an inverted bell, with a burnished steel cover surmounted by a cross, and is located in the well of a curved staircase leading to the west choir gallery. The staircase has a delicate timber and metal balustrade. The organ, housed within a centrally placed timber case with split, angled roofs, is situated in the west gallery. The gallery balustrade has a fluted, painted front, above a chunky timber bookrest separated by a horizontal gap from the panelling below. Graceful pendant light fittings comprise black painted, curved metal rods. The design incorporates a larger Lady Chapel, initiated by the Mothers' Union, within the main space.

The church displays high levels of detail and craftsmanship, showing the influence of J. Ninian Comper and the Liturgical Movement in elements such as the centrally placed, freestanding altar, while the details reflect the architects' experience in the repair of historic buildings.
