Description
Sydney Buildings comprises five terrace houses built in the early 19th century on a site sloping down towards the Kennet and Avon Canal. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with unseen roofs and moulded stacks to the party walls. They have double-depth plans.
Each house is three storeys high, with a two-window front, except for Nos. 5 and 6, which are two storeys. Nos. 3 to 6 are stepped slightly forward. The lower ground floors are to the rear. No. 2, on the right, has splayed reveals and three/six-pane sash windows to the second floor, six/six-pane sashes to the first, and a two/two-pane sash to the ground floor. It features a five-panel door with overlight set within a shallow semicircular recess. No. 3 has three/six-pane sash windows to the attic and plate glass windows below, accessed by a six-panel door in a rectangular recessed opening. No. 4 is similar, with six/six-pane sashes to the first and ground floors. No. 5 has six/six-pane sash windows to the first floor, a two/one-pane sash to the ground floor, and a six-panel door with circular panels to the centre. No. 6 has a symmetrical three-window front range with a double Roman tile roof running at a right angle to the street. It features six/six-pane sash windows and a tall window over a semicircular arched recess housing a six-panel door with circular panels to the centre. The interiors have not been inspected.
