Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Adelaide Place are a symmetrical pair of houses built around 1830. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a hipped roof with central moulded stacks along the party wall. The houses are three storeys high with a lower ground floor, presenting a symmetrical front with two windows for each house. A continuous low coped parapet, cornice, and a sill band encircle the building. The second floor has three/three-pane sash windows, while the other floors have six/six-pane sashes. Between the upper windows on the party wall is a vertical panel with an incised key pattern at the top and bottom. The ground floor doors and windows are adorned with cornices on consoles, and the six-panel doors at the ends have raised upper panels, reeded lintels, and overlights. No. 1, on the right, features balconettes on the first floor. There are blind windows on the returns and party wall of the three-window range at the rear, with cornices on consoles above the ground floor windows and balconettes above the outer six/six-pane sashes. French windows are present on the lower ground floor. The interiors have not been inspected. The houses have stone gate piers with curbs in front, and No. 1 retains its railings. The name of the place likely honors Queen Adelaide, the wife of William IV, who reigned from 1830 to 1837. The incised ornamentation is inspired by the style of Sir John Soane, making these houses an unusual Neoclassical pair on the Bathwick Estate.
