Description
A pair of symmetrical semi-detached houses built around 1827, likely designed by John Pinch. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with a hipped slate roof, featuring moulded stacks to the party wall and sides. They have double-depth plans with single-depth ranges on each side.
The external appearance is characterised by three storeys and a basement. Each house presents a two-window front, with a coped parapet, cornice, frieze, and a ground floor platband running around the building. The ground floor of the central block features banded rustication. The second floor has six/six pane sash windows. A two-storey segmental bay is present in the main central block, with a cornice and frieze. Paired Tuscan pilasters flank full-height tripartite sash windows, the first-floor window featuring a trellised balconette. A prostyle porch, set back at the angle of the houses, is supported by Ionic pillars in antis, topped with a balustraded parapet, sheltering a six/six pane sash window. The front doors are panelled with two vertical panels each. The bay to the right (No. 39) has a balustraded parapet with ornamented piers above the pilasters and four/four pane tripartite sash windows. The bay to the left (No. 40) incorporates a lower three-storey wing with a coped parapet and no cornice, with plate glass in the tripartite windows.
The interior of No. 39, as documented by the Bath Preservation Trust, includes an inner hall with a segmental fanlight, a cantilevered stone staircase with a mahogany handrail, high-quality original plasterwork, and reeded door architraves. Many of the fireplaces have been replaced.
