Description

Two sections of the precinct wall relating to Keynsham Abbey survive above ground. The northernmost length extends for 25 metres from the junction of Station Road and The Park, forming the eastern boundary of the Grade II* listed St John the Baptist Church. It is constructed of dressed limestone blocks, standing up to six courses high on the east side, and is buried on the west side. Later walling is visible on top, finished with gently rounded coping slabs. The southernmost length runs for 61 metres between National Grid Reference ST 6544068794 and ST 6545768735. This section is also faced with dressed limestone blocks, standing up to 12 courses high, with later additions on top. In one area, a portion of the wall was removed and subsequently rebuilt.

Keynsham Abbey, an Augustinian foundation, was established around 1170 by William Earl of Gloucester and became a significant institution with extensive land holdings. It was dissolved in 1539 and much of the abbey buildings were demolished. Following the Dissolution, portions of the wall were dismantled. The precinct originally had a boundary wall to the west and the River Chew to the east. The wall likely dates to the 13th or 14th century. In 1961, parts of the cloister and nave were destroyed during the construction of the Keynsham bypass.
