Description

Nos. 1-10 London Street form a terrace of ten shops built in the late 19th century, with 20th-century additions. The terrace steps uphill from No. 1 to the right. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with roofs not visible. Each shop occupies double-depth plans and has a two-window front. The design incorporates coped parapets, cornices, and ground-floor cornices that return to the right and sweep upwards to the left of each facade. Plate glass sash windows are set within moulded architraves; those on the first floor have shallow aprons, moulded sills, and pulvinated friezes to the cornices. The shopfronts are articulated by Tuscan pilasters that sit on moulded plinths with reeded scroll consoles to the cornices. No. 1 has a canted corner, and its shopfront and doorway are filled with ashlar, featuring two windows to the front, one to the canted corner, and a 20th-century door to the right return. No. 2 retains a set-back, half-glazed central door and original curved plate glass shop windows. No. 3 has a 20th-century shopfront. No. 4 is narrower, similar to No. 2, with an ashlar plinth below the sills and an original shopfront. No. 5 is similarly designed and retains its original shopfront. No. 6 is a single-window range with a half-glazed door to the left; it is not separated from No. 5 by pilasters and has an original shopfront. No. 7 has a 20th-century shopfront. No. 8 features an alleyway to the ground floor between Nos. 7 and 8, and the sills are stepped. Nos. 9 (single-window range) and 10 (two-window range) combine into a single 20th-century shop. The interiors have not been inspected.
