Description
Cholwell House is a nursing home that was originally built as a house in 1855. It is constructed from rock-faced coursed pennant stone with freestone dressings, topped with a concrete tile roof and features ashlar stacks. The building is designed in the Neo-Jacobean style.
The southeast entrance front consists of two storeys and three bays, with the central bay being half the width of the outer two. All windows are two-light casements featuring chamfered stone mullions and transoms, with those on the first floor having segmental-headed strainer arches. A central porch projects forward and has a pointed-arched entrance beneath a hoodmould with figure stops, topped by a shaped gable that includes a pierced pyramid finial. Beneath the gable, there is a family crest and a datestone. The first floor has a string course, stepped ogee, and curvilinear coped gables, each with pierced pyramid finials. Above the upper central window is a larger family crest and motto, and recessed quatrefoil rosettes are present in the flanking gables.
The southwest front features three bays across two floors, with the central bay canted. The ground floor windows are tripartite, with a pointed-arched central panel above three-light chamfered stone mullions and transoms. The central bay, originally a single storey, has been extended upwards and now includes a cusped lozenge parapet with four carved faces at the corners. The tall ashlar stacks are set on plinths and arranged in diagonal groups of six.
Inside, the house contains several ribbed and bossed ceilings. A canted staircase window features stained glass and above it, there is fine carved wooden tracery. Drawings of the building are held in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
