Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Bedford Street are two houses built around 1794 and later, positioned on the west side of Bedford Street, stepping sharply downhill from No. 1 to the right. They are constructed of limestone ashlar and feature double pitched slate roofs, with brick tops on the stacks of No. 2. Each house is three storeys high with attics and has a one-window front. The exterior includes coped parapets, cornices, and ground floor platbands.
No. 1 has steeply pitched slate mansard roofs with slate cheeks, and a dormer on the left that contains a six-over-six pane sash window. The tripartite windows have wide stone mullions, with a six-over-six pane window in the center flanked by four-over-four panes. There is a 20th-century window to the right on the ground floor, and a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels at the top, featuring an iron ring knocker and a three-pane overlight to the left. The right-hand sash of the tripartite windows is positioned under the cornice of the return of No. 20 Walcot Buildings.
No. 2 is similar in style, with painted ashlar, an eight-over-eight pane sash window, and a 20th-century six-panel door on the ground floor. The left return of No. 2 is made of breezeblocks, and No. 3 has been demolished. The interiors have not been inspected.
The history of this development is marked by challenges, as some houses were left unfinished due to a building slump in the mid-1790s, while others were destroyed in the floods of 1809 and subsequently rebuilt with 20th-century additions.
