Description
5 and 6 York Place are a pair of early 19th-century houses located at the rear of York Villa and adjacent to the Porter Butt public house. They are constructed from limestone ashlar with rubblestone on the left return, featuring double-pitched slate roofs that are hipped to the left. The roofs have tall moulded stacks and hand-thrown chimney pots on the party wall and right gable end. The houses have a double depth plan and stand two storeys high with cellars. Each house has a two-window front range, a continuous coped parapet, a cornice, and a ground floor plat-band. To the left of each house, there is a semicircular arch above a fanlight with radial glazing bars and a six-panel door. The six-over-six pane sash windows are present, though the window above the door of No. 6 is blind. The interiors were not inspected, but some joinery, including casements and shutters, remains in place, along with a staircase at the rear and a large stone fireplace with a range. These houses are modest examples of late Georgian townhouses and were part of the development along London Road, designed to work in harmony with the nearby public house.
