Description
The Church of St Michael is an Anglican parish church located in Compton Dando. It dates back to the 13th century, with alterations made in the 15th century and further enlargements in the 19th century. The church consists of a nave, a south porch, a projecting south chapel or manor pew, and a chancel. It is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and features slate roofs with coped raised verges.
The nave has a stone bell-cote at the west end, and there are 19th-century two-light round-headed windows, along with one cusped lancet window to the west of the porch. The south porch, also from the 19th century, is gabled and has an inner panelled door set in a double ogee moulded surround, topped with a hoodmould featuring fleurons and head stops. Above the door is an image niche, which also has head stops.
While the interior could not be visited during the resurvey in February 1984, it is noted to contain a fine brass in the chancel commemorating John Cutte, who died in 1575 and was once Mayor of Bristol. The brass depicts a kneeling couple with twelve children, along with a shield bearing the arms of Bristol and a merchant's mark.
