Description
The chimney located to the west of the De Montalt Works is a mid-19th century boiler stack made of limestone ashlar. It features a lofty tapered shaft that is approximately 2.8 meters wide at the base, topped with an ovolo bed-mould capping below a short vertical shaft of about 1.2 meters, which leads to a further ovolo mould cornice. The exterior has a small arched opening at the base on the east side, facing the main works, while the rest of the shaft is plain, with a moulding near the top. This chimney was connected to a boiler via a stone culvert that followed the slope from the works, approximately 80 meters to the east. It was constructed when the site transitioned from water power to steam. The specific details surrounding the construction of this tall chimney are not known, but steam power was used in the paper manufacturing process, particularly in reducing rags to fiber. This transition to steam power was noted in sales particulars from 1841. A depiction of the works from the 1850s includes the chimney. The condition of the chimney was poor at the time of inspection in 2002.
