Description

Six houses, built around 1830, form part of an extended terrace on the south side of St Mark’s Road. The front of the houses is limestone ashlar, the rear is coursed rubble, and the roofs are concrete tile, with No.4 having double Roman tiles. The houses have a narrow frontage and are double-depth, with a central valley gutter. Each house is three storeys, with one window to the front, featuring mainly plain sash windows. A cornice sits on consoles, and there is a sill band at the first floor. No.1 has replacement windows throughout, while No.6 retains original twelve-pane sashes. Doors are panelled, with some replacements, each with a shallow transom light above. A platband runs above the ground floor, and Nos.3 to 6 have a moulded cornice with a blocking course and parapet, the details of which are absent from Nos.1 and 2. Each house has two ashlar stacks, some of which have been cropped, positioned on the coped party walls. The left end of the terrace has plain gables. The rear of the houses features twelve-pane sashes, including staircase lights, though No.1 has a replacement window, and No.2 has a four-pane sash, all set in flush ashlar surrounds. Each house has a small projecting wing, and the front is marked by gatepiers with shallow pyramidal caps. The interiors have not been inspected. The first two houses are set at a slight angle to the rest of the terrace, suggesting they may have been added later, although full detailing does not align with the rest of the terrace.
