Description
Clay Lane Bridge is a Grade II listed structure built from pennant stone, which is squared and coursed on the faces and soffit. It features Bath stone ashlar voussoirs, a string course, buttress, and parapet copings, with some patching done in red and purple GWR engineering brick.
The bridge has a depressed, four-centred arch with a span of 30 feet (9 meters), and the stepped and chamfered voussoirs terminate at the footings with chamfer stops. There is some engineering brick patching on the voussoirs on both faces of the arch. The arch is flanked by buttresses, each having two off-sets with an arris profile. The lower stage of both buttresses on the west elevation (high mileage) and one on the east elevation (low mileage) have been refaced in engineering brick.
The elevations spread out as straight wing walls on either side. A moulded string course with an arris incorporates the line of the upper buttress off-set and runs the full width of the elevation, meeting the plain bands of the projecting end piers. The parapets have coping that is flush to the inside face and chamfered to an arris on the outer face, along with a substantial step featuring a quarter-round profile at the base of the inside face against the roadway. Low raked retaining walls made of coursed and squared Pennant stone extend from the wing walls along the base of the cutting sides in both directions for various distances.
