Description
This pair of gateways and garden wall, enclosing the front garden of Saltford House, was likely built in 1771 by Thomas Bennett and is contemporary with the house itself. The structure features ashlar stone for the gate piers and wall coping, while the wall is made of squared and coursed rubble. The wrought-iron gates are complemented by square-section stone posts that have blocked rustication, along with moulded plinths and caps. These posts are connected by a dwarf wall. Each gate pier, except for the left-hand pier of the eastern pair which has lost its finial, is topped with shallow dish-like urns on slender stems. The eastern pair of gates is designed as fine double-leaf gates and the entire structure extends approximately 15 meters to enclose the front gardens of Saltford House.
