Description

This is a house, later converted into a shop with accommodation above, built in 1762 by Thomas Jelly for the Duke of Kingston's Estate. It is constructed of Bath limestone ashlar with a pantile roof. The building has a double-depth, central entrance plan, though now internally divided, and extends over three storeys plus an attic and basement, with a five-window facade. The windows are late 18th century, with six/six sashes, lacking architraves. The ground floor features a panelled door with a rectangular light above it. Basement sashes are visible above street level. A platband runs along the first floor. The sills of the first-floor windows have been raised to restore their original appearance. A modillion cornice sits above the windows, followed by a parapet broken by the dormers. The roof is a mansard style, with three flat-topped dormers and an ashlar stack with offsets, but lacking chimney pots. Part of the adjacent building survives to the left, the remainder having been demolished in the late 19th century. The rear elevation is also ashlar, with three bays and eight/eight sashes. A central stair window is set within a slight projection, and there are two twelve/eight sashes. Two flat-topped dormers are also present. The interior has not been inspected. The building was one of several constructed by Jelly in partnership with a mason, Henry Fisher, under an agreement of 1762.
